I Pledge Allegiance…

March 12, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Government ministers are considering proposals to encourage us to pledge allegiance to the queen and country, similar to what the Americans do. They claim that this would result in a feeling of fitting in with society among teenagers and would reduce anti social behaviour. However, they have come under heavy criticism from republicans and abolitionists, who say that swearing allegiance to an unelected head is wrong. They offer the alternative of swearing allegiance to the country, but not the queen.

What do you think of these proposals – would you swear allegiance to the queen? Personally, I wouldn’t, as I am not considered worthy of marrying into the royal family – not that I’d want to – so they’re not worthy of my allegiance.
